Save Our Staff

(a plea from the Hayhurst Elementary Foundation)

The impending PPS budget cuts for the ’24-’25 school year will have actual effects on our children’s day-to-day life at Hayhurst.

As it stands:

·      Mrs. Crawford’s in-class Art Education will be cut in half. Our kids will only have one dedicated art class per week, as opposed to the two they are used to. With this limited class time, things like our beloved Art Show could be at risk.

·      We are losing a full-time Social Worker at the school. These invaluable team members work behind-the-scenes to offer care and attention to our students throughout the day. They are vital in making sure our children have a safe social and emotional space to learn.

·      For the first time in Hayhurst’s history, the library will be closed multiple days of the week – We are losing our librarian assistant, which means our kids will be unable to access the library five days a week, as they always have.

These support and ancillary services offer so much to our children – They provide alternative modes of learning that can reveal intelligences outside the standard curriculum. They give our kids a safe emotional landscape. They touch the daily lives of everyone at school. But they will be slashed next year… unless we do something about it.

The Hayhurst Foundation is a group of parents trying to keep these cuts from happening. Separate from our wonderful PTA, the Foundation’s sole mission is to raise money to hire and retain staff. We’re working hand-in-hand with Principal Re-Bloom to combat these impending cuts, and if we can raise enough money at this year’s auction, we may actually have a fighting chance.

Please help us make a difference. Please help us save our staff.

You can also combat these staff cuts by emailing the school board and your state legislators about fully funding our school.  We’d have $800,000 more in the Hayhurst budget if the legislature fully funded the Quality Education Model they make the Oregon Department of Education produce every year:

Purpose

The sole mission of the Hayhurst School Foundation (HSF) is to raise funds for staff positions at Hayhurst Elementary School. In fact, fundraising through the Hayhurst School Foundation is the only way to raise funds to use toward staffing at the school

HSF is “affiliated” with The Fund for PPS, meaning we operate under the Tax ID number of The Fund for PPS. To learn about the rules that govern our fundraising and how funds are used (including support of the PPS Parent Fund), visit the Fund for PPS website

HSF is one of two parent-led volunteer organizations set up to support Hayhurst Elementary; the other one is the Hayhurst PTA.
